A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, depicting a kabuki actor in a samurai role with traditional costume and theatrical poise.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō captures a kabuki actor in a dramatic pose, characteristic of the yakusha-e genre. Bunchō was active during the mid-Edo period and is recognised for his refined approach to depicting performers. The subject is shown in a stylised samurai costume, complete with two swords tucked into his sash, indicating his status within the theatrical narrative. His expression is one of intense focus, a common feature in prints intended to document specific performances or famous roles.
The composition utilises a vertical format, often referred to as hosoban, which was standard for actor prints of this era. The background features a screen decorated with plum blossoms, providing a subtle contrast to the bold, geometric patterns of the actor's robes. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones, muted reds, and soft greens, which were achieved through the precise application of woodblocks. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the contours of the figure and the folds of the heavy fabric.
Bunchō often collaborated with other artists, such as Katsukawa Shunshō, to produce works that moved away from the idealised beauty of earlier ukiyo-e. Instead, these prints focused on the individual characteristics of the actors, capturing their unique facial features and physical presence on stage. This print offers a glimpse into the theatrical culture of eighteenth-century Japan, where the kabuki theatre was a central form of public entertainment. The inclusion of fallen maple leaves on the floor suggests a seasonal setting, adding a layer of narrative context to the scene. This work remains a representative example of the technical skill involved in the production of Japanese woodblock prints during the height of the ukiyo-e tradition.
