A formal eighteenth-century portrait of Abraham Patras, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, painted by Theodorus Justinus Rheen.
This portrait depicts Abraham Patras, who served as the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1735 until his death in 1737. Painted by Theodorus Justinus Rheen, the work adheres to the formal conventions of eighteenth-century colonial portraiture. Patras is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the formal attire expected of a high-ranking official of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). His costume includes a long, dark red coat, a waistcoat, and a full-bottomed wig, which signify his status and authority within the administrative hierarchy of the period.
The composition incorporates symbolic elements typical of official portraiture. Patras holds a baton of command in his right hand, a traditional attribute denoting military or civil leadership. His left hand rests upon a table, near which heraldic shields are visible, further reinforcing his position and lineage. The background is dark and relatively indistinct, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's face and his formal garments. The lighting is focused on the upper torso and head, creating a contrast against the deeper tones of the setting.
This painting provides a visual record of the Dutch presence in the East Indies during the early eighteenth century. Rheen, who was active in the region, captured the likeness of an official whose tenure was brief but significant in the context of colonial governance. The work is a document of the era's social and political structures, reflecting the self-presentation of the Dutch elite stationed in Batavia. The surface of the canvas shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece, while the brushwork remains consistent with the academic style of the time. This print offers a clear reproduction of the original oil painting, preserving the details of the subject's expression and the textures of his clothing.
