A detailed stipple engraving from 1790 depicting a Georgian family enjoying tea in a public garden, capturing the social leisure habits of the era.
A Tea Garden is a stipple engraving after an original painting by George Morland, first published in London in 1790. The work depicts a domestic scene set within a public pleasure garden, a popular form of recreation for the middle and upper classes in eighteenth-century London. The composition is circular, framing a group of figures gathered around a wooden table. A woman in a large, elaborate hat holds an infant, while other adults and children engage in the ritual of tea drinking. A small dog and a child's toy horse are positioned near the foreground, adding to the narrative of a family outing.
Morland was well known for his genre scenes that captured the daily lives of both rural labourers and the urban middle class. This print, engraved by F.D. Soiron, demonstrates the technical precision of the stipple method, which allowed for subtle gradations of tone and texture. The soft, muted palette reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, prioritising a gentle atmospheric quality over high-contrast colour. The background features a small pond and distant figures, providing a sense of depth and scale to the garden setting. The clothing of the figures, particularly the voluminous dresses and structured hats, offers a clear record of late Georgian fashion. This print serves as a visual document of the social habits and leisure activities of the era, capturing a moment of quiet domesticity amidst the public sphere. The circular format, common in prints of this time, directs the viewer's attention to the central interaction between the family members, while the surrounding trees provide a natural canopy that softens the overall composition.
