A study of light and shadow in a woodland setting, executed with the loose, atmospheric brushwork characteristic of British Impressionism.
James Charles, a painter associated with the New English Art Club, produced this work during a period when British artists were increasingly influenced by the plein air methods of the French Impressionists. The composition depicts a quiet, wooded area bordering a small stream or pond. The artist employs a loose, broken brushwork technique to capture the dappled light filtering through the canopy of trees.
The palette consists of earthy greens, ochres, and muted browns, reflecting the natural tones of the English countryside. A solitary figure is positioned near the water, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the quiet environment. The focus remains on the atmospheric conditions and the play of light upon the foliage and the water surface, rather than precise botanical detail.
Charles was known for his ability to observe the nuances of rural life and the changing effects of light in the open air. This painting demonstrates his preference for unpretentious subjects, often found in the rural settings of Sussex or the Midlands. The application of paint is direct, with visible textures that suggest the movement of leaves and the reflection of the sky in the water. By avoiding the rigid structures of academic painting, Charles achieves a sense of immediacy and spontaneity. The work functions as a study of light and shadow, capturing a fleeting moment in a secluded woodland setting. The balance between the verticality of the tree trunks and the horizontal expanse of the water creates a stable, yet naturalistic, composition that invites the viewer to observe the subtle variations in colour and tone present in the scene.
