Frans Hals
Frans Hals, a towering figure of the Dutch Golden Age, wasn't just painting portraits; he was capturing life itself. Born in Antwerp but making his name in Haarlem, Hals possessed an uncanny ability to infuse his subjects with a vitality rarely seen before. Unlike the stiff, formal portraits of the era, Hals's works, such as *The Laughing Cavalier* and *The Banquet of the Officers of the St George Militia Company in 1616*, practically vibrate with energy.
