Description
A detailed study of the militia members from the famous group portrait by Frans Hals, capturing the character and attire of the Dutch Golden Age.
This detail captures a portion of the large-scale group portrait commissioned by the civic guard of Amsterdam, known as the Kloveniersdoelen. Frans Hals, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, began this work in 1633, though it was completed by Pieter Codde in 1637. The painting depicts the company of Captain Reinier Reael and Lieutenant Cornelis Michielsz. Blaeuw.
Hals is recognised for his loose, energetic brushwork, which brings a sense of immediacy to his subjects. In this composition, the figures are arranged with a focus on natural interaction rather than rigid formality. The men wear the typical attire of the period, including black doublets, stiff white ruffs, and sashes. Their expressions vary from confident gazes to subtle smiles, suggesting a moment of camaraderie among the militia members.
The lighting in the work is characteristic of the period, using chiaroscuro to define the forms of the figures against a neutral background. The metallic sheen of the armour and the texture of the lace collars demonstrate the technical skill involved in capturing different materials. The painting earned its nickname, the Meagre Company, due to the slender appearance of the figures, which contrasts with the more robust portrayals often seen in other militia portraits of the time.
This print offers a close look at the individual characterisations within the larger group. By focusing on this section, one can observe the specific handling of paint and the psychological depth Hals brought to his portraiture. It remains a primary example of the civic guard portrait tradition, which served to document the social and political structure of seventeenth-century Amsterdam.

The Meagre Company - Frans Hals
Artist Biography
Frans Hals
What set Hals apart was his revolutionary technique. He abandoned the meticulous detail favoured by many of his contemporaries, opting instead for a more spontaneous, almost impressionistic style. His contemporaries marvelled at his ability to capture a likeness with just a few strokes of the brush. This bravura approach not only enlivened his portraits but also hinted at the inner character of his sitters, from wealthy merchants to jovial tavern patrons.
Hals's influence on later generations of artists is undeniable. Masters like Manet and Van Gogh revered his work, recognising in it a kindred spirit. Today, Frans Hals remains celebrated for his groundbreaking approach to portraiture, his ability to breathe life into paint, and his pivotal role in shaping the Dutch Baroque. Owning a print of his work is not just acquiring an image, but capturing a moment of pure, unadulterated life.
