A striking 1966 self-portrait by Andy Warhol, featuring his signature high-contrast screen-print style and bold, non-naturalistic colour palette.
This work is a classic example of the screen-printing techniques employed by Andy Warhol during the 1960s. By utilising a photographic source, Warhol transformed his own likeness into a graphic, high-contrast image. The composition relies on a stark division between light and shadow, where the artist's face is partially obscured by a deep, saturated blue, while the background shifts into a bold, flat red. This method of layering ink allows for the mechanical reproduction of the image, a process that defined much of Warhol's output at The Factory.
Warhol often returned to the subject of his own image throughout his career. In this version, the hand positioned near the mouth introduces a sense of contemplation or hesitation, contrasting with the otherwise detached, commercial aesthetic of the print. The use of non-naturalistic colours is a hallmark of his approach to portraiture, stripping away the traditional nuances of skin tone to focus on the iconographic potential of the face. The image functions as a study in celebrity culture and the construction of identity, themes that remained central to his practice.
By removing the artist's hand from the final application of ink, Warhol questioned the nature of authorship in fine art. The resulting print is flat, lacking the depth of traditional oil painting, and instead embraces the aesthetic of mass-produced media. This specific iteration captures the artist at a time when his public persona was becoming as recognisable as the commercial products he depicted in his earlier works. The print remains a recognisable piece of twentieth-century visual culture, demonstrating the artist's ability to manipulate colour and form to create a lasting, albeit intentionally impersonal, representation of the self.
