A 1905 oil painting by Henri Matisse, capturing the sun-drenched Mediterranean terrain of Collioure through expressive brushwork and bold colour.
Painted in 1905, this work captures the Mediterranean light that defined the early period of Henri Matisse. During this summer in Collioure, Matisse worked alongside André Derain, developing the approach to colour that would soon be labelled Fauvism. The composition focuses on the gnarled forms of olive trees, which frame a path leading toward the distant sea.
Matisse employs a direct application of paint, using visible, rhythmic brushwork to construct the forms of the trees and the surrounding terrain. The palette relies on contrasts between the warm, sun-drenched yellows of the ground and the cooler, shadowed tones within the foliage. Rather than seeking photographic accuracy, the artist uses these hues to convey the intensity of the southern French sun. The sky is rendered in pale, atmospheric tones, providing a sense of distance that balances the heavy, textured foreground.
This piece demonstrates the shift away from traditional tonal modelling. Instead, Matisse uses colour to define space and light. The trees act as vertical anchors, their dark trunks providing a structural counterpoint to the fluid, dappled light on the path. The paint application is deliberate, with the artist leaving areas of the canvas visible in places, which adds to the sense of immediacy. This work reflects the artist's interest in the physical sensation of the environment, prioritising the emotional response to the scene over descriptive detail. It remains a clear example of the experimental period that preceded his later, more decorative works.
