A serene rural scene by Henri Rousseau, depicting the outskirts of Paris with characteristic simplicity and precise, flat perspective.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught customs officer, produced this work during his transition to full-time painting. The composition depicts the rural outskirts of Paris, specifically the area near Bagneux and Meudon-Billancourt. Rousseau employs his characteristic approach to perspective, where spatial depth is suggested through overlapping planes rather than traditional vanishing points. The foreground features a ploughed field with figures tending to horse-drawn carts, rendered with a direct, almost schematic clarity.
Behind this agricultural activity, a dense screen of trees separates the foreground from the village. The houses are clustered together, their forms simplified into geometric blocks, while the church spire provides a vertical anchor for the scene. The sky is a pale, uniform wash, typical of Rousseau's early outdoor studies. His palette relies on earthy greens, browns, and muted tones, reflecting the quiet atmosphere of the Parisian suburbs at the end of the nineteenth century.
Unlike his later, more fantastical jungle scenes, this work demonstrates his interest in the observation of everyday life. The brushwork is deliberate and precise, showing a lack of academic training that resulted in a unique, personal visual language. The painting captures a moment of stillness in the French countryside, documenting a period when these villages were still distinct from the expanding urban sprawl of the capital. The signature and date, visible in the lower right corner, confirm the period of its creation. This piece offers a clear example of the artist's ability to transform ordinary subjects into something distinct through his unconventional approach to form and colour.
