A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki depicting social life and leisure in the Berlin Zoological Garden.
Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki was a prolific printmaker and painter, widely recognised for his detailed observations of eighteenth-century social life. This etching, titled 'Premiere promenade de Berlin: La place des Tentes au Parc', captures a specific moment of leisure in the Berlin Zoological Garden. The composition is framed by tall, mature trees that create a natural archway, drawing the eye toward the centre of the park where a classical statue stands as a quiet anchor.
In the foreground, figures dressed in the fashions of the period are depicted in various states of social interaction. Some individuals stand in small groups, while others are seated, observing the activity around them. The presence of tents, which give the work its name, suggests a temporary or seasonal arrangement for public refreshment or entertainment. Chodowiecki employs a precise etching technique, using fine lines to define the textures of the foliage, the folds of the clothing, and the architectural elements of the park. The balance between the dense, shaded areas of the trees and the open, lighter space of the park grounds demonstrates his technical control over light and shadow.
This work provides a glimpse into the urban culture of Berlin during the Enlightenment. Chodowiecki was known for his ability to document the mundane details of daily existence with clarity and precision. By focusing on the interactions of ordinary citizens in a public space, he offers a record of the social habits and aesthetic preferences of his time. The print is a characteristic example of his output, which often combined topographical accuracy with a keen interest in human behaviour. It remains a valuable resource for those interested in the history of European urban parks and the evolution of social leisure activities in the eighteenth century.
