Descripción
An early engraving by Albrecht Dürer depicting a young couple accompanied by a skeletal figure of Death, serving as a memento mori.
The Promenade, an engraving by Albrecht Dürer, depicts a young couple walking through a rural setting. The man, dressed in the fashion of the late fifteenth century, wears a feathered cap and carries a sword at his hip. The woman wears a tall, patterned headdress and a long, flowing gown. They appear engaged in conversation, their bodies turned towards one another in a manner that suggests courtly affection.
Behind the couple, a skeletal figure emerges from behind a tree. This figure, representing Death, holds an hourglass, a traditional memento mori symbol. The presence of this figure transforms the scene from a simple depiction of a couple into a moralising commentary on the transience of life and the inevitability of mortality. Dürer uses the contrast between the youthful, vibrant appearance of the couple and the decaying form of the skeleton to communicate this theme.
The technical execution demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the burin. He employs varied line weights to define the textures of the clothing, the bark of the tree, and the distant terrain. The cross-hatching creates depth and volume, particularly in the folds of the woman's dress and the shadowed areas of the landscape. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the tree and the figures providing a clear structure against the horizontal lines of the background. This work is an early example of Dürer's ability to integrate complex allegorical narratives into precise, detailed compositions. It reflects the preoccupation with mortality common in Northern European art of the period, where the pleasures of earthly life are frequently juxtaposed with the certainty of death.

The Promenade - Albrecht Dürer
Artist Biography
Albrecht Durer
He was born in Nuremberg, the son of a Hungarian goldsmith. He trained as a goldsmith himself before apprenticing with the painter and printmaker Michael Wolgemut. The metalwork training gave him the manual precision that made his prints extraordinary. Melencolia I, Knight, Death and the Devil, and Saint Jerome in His Study, all made between 1513 and 1514, are among the finest engravings ever produced. The density of cross-hatching, the control of tonal gradation, the rendering of fur, feathers, and stone: these are virtuoso performances in a medium that most artists treated as reproductive.
He drew a rhinoceros from a description and a sketch sent by letter. He had never seen one. Dürer's Rhinoceros (1515) is anatomically wrong in several respects (the animal has an extra horn and armour plating) but it remained the standard European image of a rhinoceros for three centuries.
He was one of the first artists to paint self-portraits as a primary subject. The Self-Portrait at Twenty-Eight (1500) shows him facing the viewer directly, with long hair and a fur coat, in a pose traditionally reserved for Christ. It was either an act of supreme confidence or deliberate blasphemy. Probably both.
