A powerful woodcut by Albrecht Dürer depicting the four figures of the Apocalypse as they ride across the earth.
Albrecht Dürer produced this woodcut as part of his series illustrating the Book of Revelation. The work depicts the four figures described in the sixth chapter of the New Testament: Conquest, War, Famine, and Death. Dürer presents these figures as a unified force, charging across the composition from left to right.
The horsemen trample humanity beneath their mounts, creating a sense of unstoppable momentum. In the foreground, Death, depicted as an emaciated old man with a trident, rides a skeletal horse. Beside him, the other figures wield a bow, a sword, and a pair of scales. Above, an angel hovers, observing the destruction. Dürer uses dense hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the horses and the textures of the garments, demonstrating his mastery of the woodcut medium.
This print represents a shift in the production of religious imagery during the late fifteenth century. Dürer published the series himself, rather than relying on a patron, which allowed him greater control over the artistic output. The composition relies on a diagonal axis to convey the chaotic energy of the scene. The stark contrast between the black ink and the white paper emphasises the dramatic tension of the subject matter. This work remains a primary example of Dürer's technical skill and his ability to translate complex theological narratives into visual form. The inclusion of his monogram at the base confirms his authorship and his pride in the quality of the print.
