A series of screenprints by Sol LeWitt exploring geometric arrangements and colour sequences through a systematic, conceptual approach.
Sol LeWitt, a central figure in the development of Conceptual Art, produced the Wadsworth Portfolio in 1993. This series of screenprints demonstrates his systematic approach to visual organisation. LeWitt often prioritised the idea behind a work over its physical execution, frequently employing assistants to realise his wall drawings and prints based on precise, written instructions.
In this specific portfolio, the artist explores the interaction of colour and geometry through a rigorous set of rules. Each square frame is divided into smaller sections, containing either straight, diagonal, or concentric circular bands. The palette is consistent across the series, utilising a spectrum of primary and secondary colours that repeat in a fixed sequence. By limiting the variables to these specific geometric configurations, LeWitt removes subjective expression from the process. The result is a series that functions as a logical investigation of form and colour relationships.
These prints reflect the artist's interest in seriality, a method he used throughout his career to exhaust the possibilities of a given system. The visual effect is one of rhythmic repetition, where the eye is guided across the surface by the predictable movement of the lines. The work avoids traditional notions of composition, opting instead for a modular structure that can be expanded or rearranged. This approach aligns with the artist's belief that the concept is a machine that makes the art. The Wadsworth Portfolio remains a clear example of his ability to transform mathematical constraints into a coherent visual language, offering a precise study of how colour behaves when subjected to strict, predetermined parameters.
