Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. As a poet and painter, he operated within the CoBrA movement, which prioritised spontaneous expression and the raw, unmediated creativity often associated with children or folk art. This work, Zonnepriester (Sun Priest), dates from 1956, a period when his visual language had matured into a distinct, linear style.

The composition features a central, totemic figure constructed from fluid, calligraphic ink lines. The form is skeletal and fragmented, suggesting a ritualistic or mythological subject. Lucebert employs a minimalist approach, using varying line weights to define the figure against the stark, unadorned background. Geometric elements, such as the circular sun-like form in the upper right and the ladder-like structures within the torso, create a sense of internal rhythm.
