A hand-coloured woodcut by Dutch printer Doen Pietersz. depicting the biblical Fall of Man, rendered in the distinct graphic style of the early sixteenth century.
This hand-coloured woodcut by the Dutch printer and publisher Doen Pietersz. depicts the biblical narrative of the Fall of Man. The composition features Adam and Eve positioned on either side of the central tree, around which the serpent is coiled. Eve reaches toward the forbidden fruit, while Adam, seated upon a tree stump, holds a piece of the fruit already in his hand. The figures are rendered with the characteristic linear style of early sixteenth-century Northern European printmaking, where bold outlines define the forms against a hatched background.
Pietersz. was active in Amsterdam during the early decades of the sixteenth century, operating a press that produced various illustrated books and devotional materials. This specific print reflects the aesthetic of the period, where woodcuts were often produced as book illustrations and subsequently finished with washes of colour to provide visual clarity and appeal. The inclusion of a small bird at the base and the specific rendering of the foliage demonstrate the attention to detail common in contemporary Dutch graphic arts. The monogram visible in the lower right corner serves as the mark of the workshop or the artist, a common practice for printers of this era to establish provenance for their editions.
The work is presented here as a fine art print, capturing the texture of the original paper and the application of the hand-applied pigments. It offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Dutch Renaissance, where religious themes were disseminated through affordable, mass-produced printed media. The print remains a representative example of the technical capabilities of the woodcut medium during the transition from the late medieval period to the full flowering of the Northern Renaissance.
