A refined Art Nouveau lithograph by Armand Rassenfosse, depicting a woman examining prints, capturing the graphic design aesthetic of the late nineteenth century.
Armand Rassenfosse, a Belgian artist associated with the Liège school, produced this lithograph during the height of the Art Nouveau movement. The composition features a woman seated before a print stand, examining a portfolio of works. The background incorporates several smaller posters, including a reference to Harper's magazine, which situates the piece within the late nineteenth-century culture of graphic design and commercial illustration.
Rassenfosse employs a flat, graphic style typical of the period. The use of bold outlines and a restricted colour palette creates a clear separation between the foreground figure and the layered posters behind her. The woman, dressed in a white gown and a decorative hat, acts as a bridge between the viewer and the collection of prints she inspects. This meta-narrative, where an artwork depicts the act of viewing art, was a common trope among poster artists of the era who sought to elevate the status of the printed image.
The work demonstrates the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which were widely collected by European artists at the time. The emphasis on silhouette and the absence of traditional modelling reflect this aesthetic shift. Rassenfosse was a close associate of Félicien Rops, and his technical proficiency in printmaking is evident in the clean lines and balanced distribution of colour. The yellow background provides a stark contrast to the muted tones of the posters and the white attire of the central figure, ensuring the composition remains legible despite the density of the imagery. This print serves as a record of the graphic design trends that defined the fin de siècle, capturing the intersection of fashion, advertising, and fine art.
