A 1659 black chalk drawing by W. Verbeeck depicting a hermit in contemplation with a skull, a classic memento mori.
This drawing by W. Verbeeck, dated 1659, depicts a seated hermit in a moment of quiet contemplation. The figure is shown in profile, his head bowed and eyes closed, resting his hands upon a human skull placed in his lap. This iconography is a classic memento mori, a reminder of the inevitability of death and the transient nature of human existence. The artist employs black chalk to create soft, atmospheric shading, which defines the folds of the hermit's robes and the texture of the rock upon which he sits.
The composition is restrained, focusing entirely on the internal state of the subject. The background is suggested with minimal strokes, allowing the figure to occupy the entirety of the viewer's attention. The use of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, is characteristic of the period, providing a sense of volume and weight to the seated form. The hermit's posture, with his hunched shoulders and clasped hands, conveys a sense of humility and resignation.
Verbeeck demonstrates a high degree of technical control in this work. The lines are delicate yet purposeful, building up the form through careful layering of chalk. The skull, while a sombre object, is rendered with anatomical accuracy, grounding the spiritual theme in physical reality. This piece offers a glimpse into the seventeenth-century preoccupation with mortality and religious devotion, themes that were common in the art of the Dutch Republic. The drawing is a fine example of the period's ability to imbue a simple subject with emotional weight through subtle draughtsmanship and a clear, focused narrative.
