A precise 1790 academic red chalk study of a seated male nude, demonstrating the anatomical rigour of eighteenth-century art training.
This academic figure study, executed in red chalk, captures a seated male nude in profile. The work dates to 1790 and represents a prize-winning entry, as indicated by the Latin inscription 'Tertium Praemium' in the upper left corner. Such drawings were common exercises within the European art academies of the eighteenth century, where students were expected to demonstrate their mastery of anatomy, proportion, and light through the rigorous study of the human form.
Dubois employs the sanguine technique with precision, using the chalk to build volume through subtle hatching and cross-hatching. The figure is posed upon simple block-like structures, a common convention in academic training to provide a stable base for the model while allowing the artist to focus on the musculature of the torso, back, and limbs. The lighting is directed from the upper left, creating clear tonal transitions that define the anatomical structure of the subject. The background is kept minimal, rendered with soft, directional strokes that suggest a wall or studio environment without distracting from the primary subject.
The drawing reflects the disciplined approach of the period, prioritising clarity of form and technical accuracy. The artist's signature is visible in the upper right, confirming the provenance of this specific study. As a piece of historical draughtsmanship, it offers a clear view into the pedagogical methods of the late eighteenth century, where the ability to render the nude figure with anatomical correctness was the primary measure of an artist's skill. The use of red chalk, or sanguine, was a favoured medium for such studies due to its ability to mimic the warmth of human skin and its versatility in creating both fine lines and soft shadows.
