A serene depiction of the philosopher Zhou Dunyi, rendered in the traditional Chinese literati style with ink and subtle colour washes.
This work by Lu Peng depicts the Neo-Confucian philosopher Zhou Dunyi in a moment of quiet contemplation. The subject is a traditional motif in Chinese art, referencing the philosopher's well-known essay, 'On the Love of the Lotus', in which he identifies the flower as a symbol of purity and integrity. Lu Peng employs the conventions of the literati tradition, using controlled ink washes and delicate brushwork to define the figure and the surrounding natural elements.
The composition is balanced, with the seated figure of Zhou Dunyi positioned on a rock formation to the left, balanced by the gnarled, textured trunk of a tree on the right. The artist uses a restrained palette, allowing the subtle variations in ink tone to convey depth and atmosphere. The lotus flowers, rendered with light, suggestive strokes, emerge from the lower section of the frame, providing a visual anchor for the philosopher's gaze. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left corner follows the classical practice of integrating text and image, providing context and poetic resonance to the scene.
Lu Peng, a figure active during the mid-twentieth century, maintained a connection to traditional techniques while operating within the changing cultural climate of China. His approach here reflects a scholarly engagement with historical themes. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, favouring a minimalist aesthetic that directs the viewer's attention to the meditative quality of the subject. The paper surface retains a neutral tone, which complements the muted colours of the foliage and the ink-based rendering of the rock and tree. This print captures the essence of the original ink and colour work, preserving the nuances of the brushwork and the soft transitions between light and shadow.
