A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the tragic suicide of the Roman noblewoman Lucretia, designed by Johann Christoph Storer.
This etching, titled Zelfmoord van Lucretia, depicts the classical Roman legend of Lucretia. The narrative concerns the noblewoman who took her own life after being violated by Sextus Tarquinius, an act that precipitated the fall of the Roman monarchy. The composition is framed within an oval, a common device in seventeenth-century printmaking to focus the viewer on the central drama.
Lucretia is shown in the foreground, reclining on a bed as she drives a dagger into her chest. Her posture and expression convey a sense of tragic finality. To the left, a group of figures, including a soldier in armour, observe the scene. The inclusion of these witnesses adds a theatrical quality to the work, typical of the Baroque period. A small dog rests in the immediate foreground, providing a quiet contrast to the intensity of the human action.
The artist, Johann Baptist Caspar, worked from a design by Johann Christoph Storer. The etching demonstrates the technical skill of the period, using varied line weights to define the folds of fabric, the musculature of the figures, and the architectural elements of the room. The Latin inscription at the top, 'LVCRETIA PVDICITIAE MACVLAM PROPRIO CRVORE DILVIT', translates to 'Lucretia washes away the stain of her shame with her own blood', clarifying the moral and historical context of the image for the contemporary viewer.
This print is a fine example of how classical themes were reinterpreted through the lens of seventeenth-century European art. The use of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, helps to create a sense of volume and depth within the oval frame. It remains a compelling study of narrative composition and classical subject matter, rendered with the precision characteristic of the etching medium.
