Zayin is a work by Morris Louis, an American painter associated with the Color Field movement. Created in 1960, this piece belongs to the artist's series of stripe paintings. Louis utilised Magna, an early acrylic resin paint, to achieve his signature effect. He poured the thinned pigment directly onto unprimed canvas, allowing the material to soak into the fibres rather than sitting on the surface.

The composition consists of vertical bands of colour that appear to float against a neutral, unpainted ground. The edges of these bands are soft and blurred, a result of the paint bleeding into the fabric. This technique removes the presence of the artist's brushstroke, shifting the focus entirely to the interaction of colour and the physical properties of the medium. The vertical orientation of the stripes creates a sense of upward movement, while the negative space between the forms provides a balance to the density of the pigment.

Louis was part of the Washington Color School, a group of artists who prioritised the optical experience of colour over gestural mark-making. By eliminating traditional drawing and composition, Louis sought to create a pure visual experience. The title, Zayin, is the seventh letter of the Hebrew alphabet, reflecting the artist's practice of using titles from Hebrew, Sanskrit, or musical terminology to avoid descriptive or narrative associations. This approach ensures the viewer engages with the work as a direct encounter with colour and form, free from external references or symbolic meaning.
