A 1925 geometric abstraction by László Moholy-Nagy, featuring overlapping circles and linear structures that explore transparency and light.
Z II, painted by László Moholy-Nagy in 1925, represents the artist's exploration of transparency, light, and geometric order. During his tenure at the Bauhaus, Moholy-Nagy moved away from representational subjects to focus on the physical properties of space and the interaction of forms. This work features a series of overlapping circles and intersecting lines that create a sense of depth on a two-dimensional plane.
The composition relies on a calculated arrangement of circles, which are segmented by vertical and horizontal bands. By using varying degrees of opacity and colour density, Moholy-Nagy suggests layers that appear to float above the neutral background. The palette is restrained, utilising soft pinks, muted yellows, and greys, punctuated by sharper black lines. These elements demonstrate his interest in how light behaves when passing through translucent surfaces, a concept he also investigated through his photography and film work.
Moholy-Nagy viewed the canvas as a space for optical experimentation rather than a window into a narrative scene. The diagonal line cutting across the upper portion of the frame provides a structural counterpoint to the circular forms, guiding the eye across the surface. The work avoids decorative excess, favouring a precise, industrial aesthetic that aligns with the principles of the New Vision. His approach to painting during this period was informed by his belief that art should reflect the technological advancements of the modern age. Z II remains a clear example of his ability to balance mathematical rigour with a refined sense of visual harmony.
