A traditional Ukiyo-e hanging scroll depicting a woman in a patterned kimono seated on a wooden veranda, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts a solitary woman seated upon an engawa, or wooden veranda, a common architectural feature in traditional Japanese dwellings. The artist, Furuyama Moroshige, was a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e school, active during the Genroku period. His work focuses on the depiction of contemporary life, specifically the beauty of women, known as bijin-ga.
The figure is rendered with delicate, controlled lines. She wears a kimono featuring a bold, repeating pattern, which contrasts with the muted, earthy tones of the surrounding architecture and the silk ground. Her posture is relaxed, suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation. To her left, a shoji screen provides a geometric backdrop, while a small tea set rests on the floor, adding a domestic element to the composition. To the right, a few simple stalks of flowers emerge from the ground, providing a subtle connection to the natural world.
Moroshige employs a flat perspective, typical of the period, which prioritises the decorative quality of the garments and the arrangement of space over three-dimensional realism. The colour palette is restrained, allowing the red of the kimono to draw the eye. The work is mounted on a textile border, which frames the central image and maintains the integrity of the original scroll format. This piece offers a window into the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the grace of the human form was often presented in harmony with simple, functional surroundings. The artist's signature and seal are visible on the left side of the composition, confirming the provenance of this traditional ink and colour work on silk.
