This woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu, titled Young Men of Fashion - A Set of Three (Wakashu sanpukutsui), exemplifies the benizuri-e technique, a style of colour printing that emerged in the mid-eighteenth century. The work features three figures, identified as wakashu, or adolescent males, depicted in a refined domestic setting. The composition is structured as a triptych, with each figure occupying a distinct space defined by architectural elements such as sliding doors and verandas.
Toyonobu was a master of the bijin-ga genre, yet he applied his characteristic grace to the depiction of these young men. The figures wear elaborate kimono adorned with geometric and floral patterns, demonstrating the artist's attention to textile design. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft greens, muted ochres, and the characteristic pinkish-red pigment that defines the benizuri-e style. The lines are delicate and precise, capturing the fluid movement of the garments and the subtle expressions of the subjects.
Beyond the aesthetic qualities, the print offers a glimpse into the social fashions of the Edo period. The wakashu are shown with the characteristic forelock hairstyle, a signifier of their youth and status. They carry accessories such as a lantern, a closed umbrella, and a small fan, which serve as props to enhance the narrative quality of the scene. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions adds a layer of literary context, common in ukiyo-e prints of this era.
