A refined Qing Dynasty figure painting by Gu Jianlong, depicting the legendary consort Yang Guifei in a moment of courtly leisure.
This work by Gu Jianlong depicts the historical figure Yang Guifei, a consort of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty. The composition focuses on the intimate moment following her bath, with a kneeling attendant offering a vessel. Gu Jianlong, a professional painter active during the early Qing period, was known for his technical precision in figure painting and his ability to render the refined atmosphere of court life.
The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the figures, contrasting the flowing, voluminous robes of the consort with the more restrained posture of the attendant. The setting is highly decorative, featuring a patterned floor, a screen depicting a mountainous scene, and a backdrop of bamboo and lotus flowers. These elements provide a sense of enclosure and luxury, typical of the genre of courtly life depictions. The colour palette remains balanced, using muted earth tones for the architecture and furniture, which allows the deep red of Yang Guifei's robe to draw the eye.
Gu Jianlong’s approach to space is ornamental rather than strictly perspectival. The arrangement of objects and figures creates a structured, stage-like environment. The inclusion of the screen behind the figures adds a layer of depth, while the floral motifs and geometric floor patterns contribute to the overall decorative quality of the piece. This print captures the aesthetic values of the period, where the depiction of historical and legendary figures served as a subject for both moral reflection and aesthetic appreciation. The work reflects the high level of craftsmanship associated with professional painters of the seventeenth century, who catered to the tastes of the elite and the imperial court.
