This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshiro IV in the role of Otoma, the daughter of Ohina. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a series of actor portraits that defined the artist's brief but intense career. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised features common in contemporary ukiyo-e, opting instead for a style that emphasises the specific, often exaggerated, physical traits of the performers.
The composition focuses on the head and shoulders of the actor. The figure is set against a plain, mica-dusted background, a technique that draws attention to the subject's expression and costume. The actor's face is rendered with bold, clean lines, capturing a sense of theatrical presence. The kimono features a striped pattern, rendered with precision, which provides a visual contrast to the smooth, pale skin of the face. The hair is styled in the elaborate fashion of the period, adorned with decorative combs.
Sharaku's approach to portraiture remains distinct within the history of Japanese printmaking.
