A dramatic 1867 history painting by Bertalan Székely depicting the heroic defence of Eger Castle by local women during the 1552 Ottoman siege.
Bertalan Székely, a central figure in 19th-century Hungarian art, completed this work in 1867. The painting depicts the Siege of Eger in 1552, a conflict between the defenders of Eger Castle and the Ottoman Empire. Székely focuses on the participation of women in the defence, a subject that carries significant weight in Hungarian national identity.
The composition is structured around a central female figure who stands atop the ramparts. She is shown in a moment of active resistance, brandishing a sword while surrounded by the chaos of battle. The scene is filled with motion: ladders lean against the stone walls, soldiers grapple in the foreground, and the background is consumed by the smoke and fire of the siege. Székely uses a palette dominated by warm, fiery tones to convey the intensity of the conflict. The lighting is dramatic, casting deep shadows that define the forms of the figures and the rugged texture of the castle walls.
As a history painter, Székely was concerned with the accurate portrayal of period costume and weaponry, yet the work remains a piece of Romantic art. The emotional charge of the scene is prioritised over a clinical depiction of military tactics. The figures are rendered with a high degree of naturalism, capturing the physical strain of the combatants. This painting is held in the collection of the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest. It remains a primary example of how 19th-century artists used historical narratives to explore themes of courage and national resilience. The work is notable for its dynamic composition and the way it integrates the human figure into a complex, multi-layered battle scene.
