Beschreibung

A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting women and children observing the Sumida River at dusk.

This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai captures a quiet evening scene along the Sumida River. The composition focuses on a group of women and children gathered on a wooden platform, observing the river activity. In the distance, boats drift across the water, while a single, stylised lightning bolt or firework streak marks the sky above. The figures are rendered with the characteristic grace of the period, wearing patterned kimonos and holding fans, their postures suggesting a relaxed, social atmosphere.

Hokusai, active during the Edo period, produced this work early in his career. It reflects the conventions of Ukiyo-e, a genre concerned with the fleeting pleasures of urban life. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, separating the foreground figures from the distant riverbank with a sense of spatial clarity. The use of line is precise, defining the folds of fabric and the gentle ripples of the water with economy. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on subtle tones to convey the mood of a summer evening.

Unlike his later, more dramatic series such as the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, this print demonstrates an interest in domestic observation and social interaction. The children playing on a log extending into the water provide a sense of playfulness, contrasting with the composed stance of the women. The print serves as a record of contemporary leisure activities in Edo, documenting the fashion and customs of the time. The inclusion of the cartouche and seals confirms its status as a traditional woodblock production, intended for a wide audience of print collectors and enthusiasts of the floating world.

Artist Biography

Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai was a visionary Japanese artist whose influence stretched far beyond his lifetime. Born in 1760 in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Hokusai became world-renowned for his mastery of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings. His most iconic work, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, is instantly recognisable across the globe and embodies his lifelong fascination with the power of nature. Hokusai’s ability to capture the dynamic tension between beauty and impermanence is a hallmark of his style, deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics and Buddhist philosophy.

Throughout his prolific career, Hokusai produced thousands of prints, sketches and illustrated books. He continually reinvented his style and identity, even adopting over 30 different artist names as his work evolved. His bold compositions, innovative use of perspective and striking colour palettes redefined Japanese printmaking. Hokusai's famed series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji showcases not just technical mastery, but a spiritual reverence for landscape and everyday life. His work depicted everything from serene rural scenes to mythological creatures and bustling cityscapes.

Hokusai's legacy transcended Japan, profoundly shaping Western art during the 19th century through the movement known as Japonisme. Artists like Monet, Van Gogh and Whistler drew direct inspiration from his compositions and sensibilities. Today, Hokusai is celebrated not only as one of Japan’s greatest artists, but as a bridge between Eastern and Western visual culture. His art continues to captivate modern audiences with its fluid lines, narrative depth and timeless exploration of the human connection to nature.
