A refined Ukiyo-e painting by Miyagawa Chōshun depicting a woman adjusting her hair alongside an attendant beneath a cherry tree.
This work by Miyagawa Chōshun captures a quiet moment of daily life within the Ukiyo-e tradition. Chōshun was a prominent painter of the early eighteenth century, known for his focus on the genre of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. Unlike many of his contemporaries who worked primarily in woodblock prints, Chōshun specialised in paintings, allowing for a softer application of colour and more fluid brushwork on silk.
The composition features a woman seated upon a stone bench, her arms raised as she adjusts her hair. Beside her stands an attendant, depicted in a smaller scale, wearing a patterned kimono. The figures are positioned beneath the boughs of a cherry tree, which provides a seasonal context for the scene. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, using the diagonal of the bench to guide the eye across the frame. The treatment of the fabric, particularly the folds of the seated woman's robes, demonstrates the artist's attention to the volume and weight of the garments.
Chōshun avoided the heavy outlines often associated with later printmakers, opting instead for a more painterly approach. The background remains relatively sparse, directing the viewer's focus toward the interaction between the two figures. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the depiction of refined leisure and seasonal beauty held a specific cultural appeal. The soft rendering of the cherry blossoms and the calm expressions of the subjects contribute to the overall atmosphere of stillness. As a representative example of Chōshun's output, the painting illustrates the technical skill required to balance decorative pattern with human form, maintaining a sense of grace throughout the composition.
