A refined fan painting by Ogata Kōrin, featuring wisteria vines rendered in ink and colour against a luminous gold-leaf background.
This work by Ogata Kōrin displays the characteristic aesthetic of the Rinpa school, which flourished in seventeenth and eighteenth-century Japan. The composition is executed on a fan-shaped paper, a format that demands a specific balance between the decorative surface and the natural subject matter. Kōrin utilises a gold-leaf ground to provide a reflective, luminous backdrop for the wisteria vines.
The wisteria is rendered with a focus on calligraphic line and simplified form. The artist employs a limited palette of deep blues and greens to suggest the hanging clusters of flowers and the twisting stems. By placing the plant asymmetrically across the fan, Kōrin creates a sense of movement and organic growth. The gold leaf is not merely a background but acts as an active element of the design, interacting with the light to suggest a space beyond the physical limits of the paper.
Kōrin was a central figure in the Rinpa tradition, known for his ability to combine bold, graphic design with a keen observation of nature. His work often features this interplay between high-status materials, such as gold and silver, and the transient beauty of the natural world. The fan format itself was a popular medium for artists of this period, allowing for portable, intimate expressions of seasonal themes. This piece demonstrates the economy of brushwork and the sophisticated sense of design that defined Kōrin's output. The artist's signature and seal are visible on the lower right, confirming the attribution to his hand. The work remains a clear example of the decorative sensibilities prevalent in the Edo period, where the boundary between fine art and functional objects was frequently blurred.
