Beschreibung
Windsor Castle rises above the tiled roofs of Eton, its pale Round Tower catching the light over a belt of green trees and warm red brick houses.
William the Conqueror began Windsor Castle around 1070 to defend the western approach to London. Its hilltop position above the Thames also placed it beside a royal hunting ground. Later monarchs transformed the fortress into a palace, replacing timber walls with stone during the twelfth century.
Seen from Eton, the great cylindrical tower dominates the roofline, flanked by battlemented walls and smaller square towers. Trees conceal the lower slopes, their rounded crowns separating the castle from nearby homes. Chimneys and dormer windows punctuate the foreground roofs, while sunlight warms the masonry beneath loose white clouds in a pale blue sky.
