A detailed study of the artistic process, depicting the sculptor William Rush at work in his studio with a model and chaperone.
Thomas Eakins produced this work in 1877, focusing on the historical figure of William Rush, a Philadelphia woodcarver. The scene depicts Rush in his workshop, engaged in the creation of his famous sculpture, the Allegorical Figure of the Schuylkill River. Eakins presents a quiet, observational study of the artistic process, placing the sculptor alongside his model and a chaperone.
The composition is structured around the central figure of the nude model, who stands with her back to the viewer. Her posture is balanced and naturalistic, contrasting with the active, working figure of Rush to the right. A seated woman, acting as a chaperone, occupies the left side of the frame, occupied with needlework. This inclusion of the chaperone was a nod to the historical reality of the era, where such figures were necessary to maintain propriety during life-drawing sessions.
Eakins employs a muted, earthy palette dominated by browns, ochres, and deep shadows. This choice of colour reinforces the atmosphere of a working studio, filled with wood shavings, tools, and half-finished carvings. The lighting is focused, drawing attention to the form of the model and the physical labour of the sculptor. The brushwork is deliberate and precise, reflecting Eakins's interest in anatomy and the mechanics of human movement. By choosing this subject, Eakins connects his own practice as a teacher and painter to the tradition of American craftsmanship established by Rush. The work functions as a meditation on the nature of artistic creation, the role of the model, and the physical environment required to bring a concept into material form. It remains a significant example of Eakins's commitment to realism and his analytical approach to the human figure within a specific, grounded environment.
