Where (1960) is a representative example of the Stripe series by American artist Morris Louis. During this period, Louis refined his technique of pouring thinned Magna paint directly onto unprimed canvas. This method allowed the pigment to soak into the fibres of the fabric, rather than sitting on the surface as a traditional impasto layer would. The result is a fusion of colour and support, where the paint appears to exist within the weave of the canvas itself.

The composition consists of a series of vertical bands of varying hues, arranged side by side. These stripes originate from the upper edge of the canvas and descend, tapering as they move downwards. The application of the paint creates a soft, blurred edge where the colour meets the raw, unpainted ground. This interaction between the saturated pigments and the neutral background creates a sense of light and space without relying on traditional perspective or representational forms.

Louis was a central figure in the Washington Color School, a group of artists who prioritised the optical effects of colour and the flatness of the picture plane.
