Kishi Ganryo, a prominent figure of the Kishi school in Kyoto, produced this hanging scroll using traditional ink wash techniques. The composition centres on a modest watermill nestled against a steep, rocky incline. A solitary figure walks along the path near the structure, providing a sense of scale to the rugged terrain. The artist employs varying densities of ink to suggest the texture of the stone and the foliage of the overhanging tree, while the negative space of the silk represents the misty atmosphere of the mountain environment.

Ganryo was the adopted son of Kishi Ganku, the founder of the Kishi school. His work often reflects the school's emphasis on naturalism combined with the expressive brushwork characteristic of the Edo period. The application of ink is controlled, allowing for soft transitions between the dark, defined forms of the rocks and the lighter, ethereal washes that define the distant peaks.
