A refined ink painting by Chen Zi depicting the ritual washing of a white elephant, accompanied by the Heart Sutra in elegant calligraphy.
This work by Chen Zi, a painter active during the early Qing Dynasty, depicts the traditional Buddhist subject of washing a white elephant. The composition is sparse, focusing on the central figures: a large, gentle elephant being tended to by attendants, and a figure seated atop the animal. The ink lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the literati style that prioritised calligraphic brushwork over heavy colour application. The negative space surrounding the figures creates a sense of stillness and meditative focus.
Above the main illustration, a block of text presents the Heart Sutra, written in elegant script. This integration of calligraphy and painting is a hallmark of Chinese art, where the written word carries as much weight as the visual image. The presence of multiple red seals indicates the work's history of ownership and appreciation by collectors over the centuries. Chen Zi, known for his skill in figure painting and his ability to capture subtle expressions, uses a muted palette to maintain the solemnity of the religious theme.
The elephant, a symbol of strength and wisdom in Buddhist iconography, is rendered with soft, rounded forms that contrast with the sharper, more angular lines of the human figures. The attendants are shown in various postures of service, their robes draped in a manner that suggests movement despite the overall static nature of the scene. This print captures the delicate balance between the physical world and the spiritual concepts represented by the sutra. It is a fine example of the refined aesthetic sensibilities prevalent in seventeenth-century Chinese ink painting, where clarity of line and economy of form define the visual experience.
