A refined example of Japanese calligraphy by Emperor Go-Yōzei, featuring fluid ink characters set against a gold-decorated paper scroll.
This work presents a waka poem rendered in the distinctive kana-majiri script associated with the Japanese imperial court. Emperor Go-Yōzei, who reigned during the late Momoyama period, was a patron of the arts and a practitioner of traditional calligraphy. The piece demonstrates the fluid, cursive style known as sōsho, or grass script, where individual characters flow into one another to create a rhythmic visual experience.
The paper itself is decorated with subtle, gold-leaf motifs of waves, providing a shimmering background that interacts with the dark, bold ink strokes. This combination of text and decorative paper reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the era, where the physical presentation of poetry was as important as the literary content. The vertical orientation of the scroll is typical of traditional Japanese display, designed to be hung in a tokonoma or alcove.
In this composition, the ink varies in density, showing the pressure and speed of the brush. The characters are arranged to balance the negative space of the paper, creating a sense of movement that mirrors the wave patterns beneath the text. Such works were often exchanged between courtiers or presented as gifts, functioning as both personal expression and social currency. The preservation of this scroll allows for an examination of the brushwork techniques favoured by the aristocracy during the transition into the Edo period. The interplay between the gold-flecked paper and the deep black ink creates a visual harmony that is characteristic of high-status Japanese calligraphy from this time.
