Wainhouse Tower above Halifax in West Yorkshire began as an industrial chimney, its slender stone shaft now rising above wooded slopes, hillside houses and distant green fields.
Wainhouse Tower stands on Halifax's King Cross hillside in Calderdale. Built between 1871 and 1875 as a chimney for a dye works, it was completed as an ornamental tower instead, with viewing galleries and a cupola above a shaft reaching 253 feet from its doorway.
The narrow tower rises from dense trees near the centre right, its small ornate top silhouetted against blue sky. Across the valley, pale houses step through green fields and wooded slopes. Grey rocks and yellow green grass occupy the near edge, contrasting with darker foliage below. Scattered ochre trees suggest early autumn, while high white clouds preserve the brightness of the afternoon.
