A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Reinier Nooms depicting the Louvre palace from the banks of the Seine.
This etching depicts the Louvre as it appeared in the mid-seventeenth century, viewed from the banks of the Seine. The work is a product of the Chalcographie du Louvre, which preserves and prints from original copper plates. The artist, Reinier Nooms, also known as Zeeman, was a Dutch maritime painter and etcher who spent significant time in Paris. His technical skill in rendering nautical subjects and urban architecture is evident in the precise handling of the river vessels and the structural details of the palace.
The composition captures the riverfront with a focus on the interplay between the stone architecture and the water. Large, rounded forms of cargo or stone sit along the bank, while small figures populate the foreground, providing a sense of scale to the grand edifice behind them. The sky is filled with billowing clouds, rendered with fine, directional lines that suggest movement and atmospheric depth. The etching demonstrates the characteristic clarity of Dutch printmaking from this period, where the focus remains on accurate observation and the structural integrity of the scene.
As a historical document, the print offers a view of Paris before the extensive urban transformations of later centuries. The Chalcographie du Louvre continues to produce impressions from the original plates, maintaining the tradition of intaglio printing. This print serves as a record of the architectural state of the Louvre during the reign of Louis XIV, reflecting the maritime and commercial activity that defined the Seine in the seventeenth century. The work is valued for its documentary precision and the quality of its line work, which captures the textures of stone, water, and fabric with equal attention.
