A striking maritime scene by self-taught artist Alfred Wallis, depicting a steamship navigating icy waters with his signature raw, intuitive style.
Alfred Wallis, a former mariner from St Ives, began painting in his late sixties after the death of his wife. He possessed no formal training, yet his work captures the essence of maritime life with a directness that appealed to the St Ives modernists, including Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood. Wallis typically painted on scavenged materials, such as cardboard boxes or scraps of wood, using limited household paints. His approach to perspective is intuitive rather than academic, often prioritising the relative importance of objects over their spatial accuracy.
In Voyage to Labrador, the composition is dominated by a stark, dark sky and jagged, white icebergs that loom over a steamship. The vessel, rendered in ochre and brown tones, sits centrally in the frame. The sea is depicted with rough, textured brushwork, suggesting the cold, turbulent waters of the North Atlantic. Wallis often relied on his memory of past voyages, distilling complex scenes into simplified, graphic forms. The lack of traditional shading or atmospheric perspective creates a flat, immediate quality that draws the viewer into the narrative of the journey.
Wallis did not seek to replicate reality, but rather to record his experiences as a fisherman and sailor. His work is characterised by a raw, unrefined aesthetic that rejects the conventions of the art establishment. By using whatever materials were at hand, he maintained a humble connection to his subject matter. This piece reflects his preoccupation with the dangers of the sea and the isolation of the vessels that navigated it. His output remains a singular example of self-taught expression, unburdened by the expectations of the contemporary art world.
