Aleksey Savrasov, a founding member of the Peredvizhniki movement, occupies a specific position in the history of Russian art. His approach to the natural world moved away from the academic conventions of his time, favouring a direct observation of the Russian countryside. This work captures the vast, atmospheric expanse of the Volga River, a subject that held great significance for the artist throughout his career.
The composition is dominated by the interplay between the heavy, cloud-filled sky and the reflective surface of the water. A single boat sits in the foreground, its mast cutting vertically through the horizontal lines of the riverbank and the horizon.
