This engraving by the Florentine goldsmith and printmaker Cristofano Robetta depicts a traditional devotional subject: the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child and the young Saint John the Baptist, accompanied by two angels. Robetta, active in Florence during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, is known for his technical approach to the burin, which often mirrors the linear qualities found in the works of his contemporaries, including Filippino Lippi and Sandro Botticelli.

The composition is arranged with a central focus on the Virgin, whose form is draped in heavy, voluminous fabric. The figures are positioned within a rocky, somewhat sparse landscape, a common setting for such devotional scenes in the period. Robetta’s work is characterised by a specific approach to shading and contour. He employs a system of cross-hatching to build volume in the drapery and the musculature of the children, while the faces are rendered with softer, more delicate lines. This print offers a clear view into the graphic arts of the Italian Renaissance, where the translation of painterly compositions into the medium of engraving allowed for the wider dissemination of religious imagery.
