A serene Northern Renaissance depiction of the Virgin and Child, featuring delicate brushwork and symbolic cherries.
The Master of the Female Half-Lengths is an anonymous Netherlandish painter active during the early sixteenth century. This artist is identified by a specific body of work depicting women in domestic settings, often engaged in reading, playing music, or sewing. This composition, featuring the Virgin and Child, aligns with the stylistic conventions of the period, which favoured smooth, enamel-like surfaces and a refined, courtly aesthetic.
The Virgin is depicted in a half-length pose against a dark, neutral background. Her expression is serene, and her attire reflects the fashion of the Burgundian court, with a dark bodice and a red mantle draped over her shoulders. The Christ Child, seated upon her lap, reaches towards a pair of cherries held by the Virgin. In Christian iconography, cherries often symbolise the sweetness of character or the fruits of paradise, and they may also serve as a prefiguration of the Passion. The painting demonstrates the artist's focus on soft modelling and the delicate rendering of skin tones, which are characteristic of the workshop's output.
Unlike the more dramatic works of contemporary Italian painters, this piece maintains a quiet, intimate quality. The figures are positioned to create a sense of closeness, with the Virgin's hand gently guiding the child. The attention to detail in the jewellery and the fine texture of the garments provides a glimpse into the material culture of the era. This work is typical of the devotional images produced for private collectors in the Low Countries, where the emphasis was on accessibility and emotional connection rather than monumental scale. The composition remains balanced, with the dark background ensuring that the focus stays on the interaction between the two figures.
