A detailed woodcut section from the monumental 1500 map of Venice, capturing the northern lagoon and distant mountains with Renaissance precision.
This print represents a section of the monumental 'Venetie MD', a large-scale woodcut map of Venice produced by Jacopo de' Barbari at the turn of the sixteenth century. The work is a technical achievement of the Italian Renaissance, requiring the assembly of six large woodblocks to capture the city and its surrounding lagoon with unprecedented geographical precision. This specific detail focuses on the northern reaches of the lagoon, showing the islands of Torcello and Burano, with the distant Alpine foothills forming a backdrop.
The composition employs a bird's-eye perspective, a choice that allowed the artist to document the urban layout and maritime infrastructure of the Venetian Republic. To the right, a personified wind head emerges from clouds, labelled with the winds Aquilo and Vulturnus. This inclusion of classical allegorical figures is characteristic of the period, blending scientific observation with the artistic conventions of the time. The water is rendered through fine, horizontal hatching, which creates a sense of movement and depth across the lagoon surface. Small vessels are scattered throughout, providing a sense of scale and activity within the maritime environment.
Jacopo de' Barbari was an artist who moved between Italy and the courts of Northern Europe, and his work reflects a synthesis of Italian spatial awareness and the meticulous graphic traditions of the North. This print is not merely a decorative image but a document of early modern urban planning and cartographic ambition. The clarity of the line work and the systematic approach to the landscape demonstrate the transition toward empirical representation in European art. It remains a primary source for historians studying the topography of Venice before the major architectural changes of the later centuries.
