A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Giovanni Francesco Venturini, capturing the powerful cascade of the River Aniene in Tivoli.
This etching by Giovanni Francesco Venturini depicts the dramatic cascade of the River Aniene at Tivoli. It originates from the fourth book of his series, Le fontane di Roma, published by the prominent Roman printmaker Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi. The work captures the intersection of natural force and human architecture, a common theme in seventeenth-century Italian printmaking.
Venturini employs precise hatching to render the textures of the rugged rock formations and the turbulent water. The composition balances the heavy, shadowed cliffs on the left with the lighter, more distant structures of the town of Tivoli. Small figures are positioned in the foreground, providing a sense of scale against the immense power of the waterfall. The artist uses the etching needle to create varied line weights, which define the architectural details of the buildings and the fluid motion of the falling water.
As a practitioner of the veduta style, Venturini documents the topography of the Roman countryside with technical accuracy. The print reflects the interest of the period in the grand, picturesque qualities of the Italian landscape. By focusing on the interplay between the built environment and the natural world, the work provides a record of the site as it appeared in the late seventeenth century. The inclusion of the title and publisher information at the base of the image follows the standard conventions of the era, identifying the print as part of a larger collection dedicated to the water features of Rome and its surroundings.
