Frans Jansz. Post was one of the first European artists to document the Americas. He travelled to Brazil in 1637 as part of the retinue of Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, the governor of the Dutch colony in the region. During his seven-year stay, Post produced a series of paintings that recorded the geography, flora, and colonial presence in the territory.

This work depicts the coastal environment of Itamaracá with a characteristic focus on the horizon line and the expansive, light-filled sky typical of Dutch painting from this period. The composition is divided into a foreground occupied by figures and a distant, low-lying coastline. The figures, including a rider on horseback and individuals carrying baskets, provide a sense of scale against the vastness of the water and the distant hills.
