Frederic Edwin Church, a central figure of the Hudson River School, travelled to South America in 1853 and 1857. These expeditions provided the primary source material for his large-scale depictions of the Andes. This work captures the volcano Cotopaxi, which Church observed during his travels through Ecuador. The composition balances the immense scale of the volcanic peak with the immediate, humid details of the tropical foreground.

The painting employs a clear atmospheric perspective. The distant, snow-capped summit is rendered with cool, pale tones, while the foreground features warmer, earthy colours and precise botanical detail. A waterfall cascades into a calm pool, providing a reflective surface that mirrors the sky. The inclusion of a lone figure in a small boat and a person resting on the bank provides a sense of scale, contrasting human presence against the geological magnitude of the mountain.

Church utilised his sketches to construct this scene in his studio. He combined elements from various locations to create an idealised yet geographically grounded representation. The light suggests the early morning, with the sun illuminating the upper slopes while the valley remains in shadow.
