André Derain painted this work during the summer of 1905, a period he spent in the Mediterranean coastal town of Collioure alongside Henri Matisse. This collaboration resulted in the development of Fauvism, a style defined by the use of non-naturalistic colour and expressive brushwork. In this composition, Derain applies paint in short, distinct dashes that create a sense of rhythmic movement across the canvas.
The palette consists of high-chroma pigments, including cadmium yellows, vermilion reds, and cobalt blues. These colours do not aim to replicate the actual appearance of the Mediterranean coast; instead, they function as independent elements of the design. The foreground is composed of staccato marks that suggest sun-drenched vegetation, while the middle ground features the terracotta roofs of the village. The sea is rendered in a deep, saturated blue that contrasts with the warm tones of the land.
Derain avoids traditional modelling or soft transitions. Each area of the painting remains distinct, contributing to a flattened spatial effect. The two prominent pine trees frame the view, guiding the eye toward the water. This approach reflects the artist's interest in the structural potential of colour, moving away from the descriptive requirements of traditional painting. The work captures the intensity of the southern French light through a deliberate, systematic application of pigment. It remains a primary example of the early twentieth-century shift toward abstraction, where the artist prioritises the autonomy of the medium over the objective representation of the subject.

Artist Biography
Andre Derain
He was born in Chatou in 1880 and had originally studied to become an engineer. He met Matisse in 1898 while attending painting classes under Eugene Carriere. The Fauvist paintings are explosions of unnatural colour: trees in orange, water in violet, shadows in green. They were among the most radical works produced in Paris at the turn of the century.
By 1908, Derain was already breaking with the style. He turned to Cezanne, then passed through a Cubist phase, and by the 1920s had arrived at a fully Neoclassical manner. The wildest of the Fauves became one of the most conservative painters in France. The conservative turn brought financial success and mainstream praise. During the Second World War, the Nazis approved of his Neoclassical work. After the war, he was unjustly accused of collaboration. His reputation never fully recovered. He died in 1954.
