Beschreibung
A detailed 1931 coloured pencil study of the Italian coastal town of Atrani by M.C. Escher, capturing the architectural geometry of the Amalfi Coast.
This work captures the Italian coastal town of Atrani, a subject that frequently occupied M.C. Escher during his residence in Italy. Executed in 1931, the drawing demonstrates his early focus on the structural geometry of Mediterranean architecture. The composition utilises a high vantage point, looking down upon the tightly packed white buildings and the distinctive bell tower of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena.
Escher employs a precise, controlled application of coloured pencil to define the forms. The steep cliffs on the right side of the frame provide a vertical contrast to the horizontal expanse of the sea, which is rendered with subtle, rhythmic strokes. Unlike his later, more famous mathematical tessellations and impossible constructions, this piece reflects his observational period. It documents the physical reality of the Amalfi Coast, yet the arrangement of the buildings already hints at the artist's preoccupation with spatial relationships and the interplay between man-made structures and the natural environment.
The colour palette remains grounded in the earthy tones of the region, with the yellow domes and terracotta roofs providing small accents against the white masonry and the deep blue-green of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The inclusion of the staircase in the foreground draws the viewer into the scene, creating a sense of physical descent into the town. This drawing serves as a record of Escher's travels and his methodical approach to documenting the world before he transitioned into the conceptual and paradoxical imagery that defined his later career. The work remains a clear example of his technical proficiency and his ability to find order within the chaotic, organic growth of historic Italian settlements.
