This engraving belongs to a series commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor to commemorate the military campaigns in the Western Regions. Jean Denis Attiret, a Jesuit missionary and court painter in Beijing, contributed to the design of these works. The composition reflects a synthesis of European perspective and traditional Chinese aesthetic values.

The scene depicts a cavalry engagement, capturing the movement of horses and archers across a rugged terrain. The artist employs fine lines to delineate the figures, weaponry, and the surrounding topography.
