A detailed 1731 etching by Jan Caspar Philips documenting historical penal practices in Persia, rendered with precise line work and engraving techniques.
This etching by Jan Caspar Philips, dated 1731, provides a detailed visual account of historical penal practices. The work, titled 'Verscheide wyzen van straf-oeffeningen by de Persianen gebruiklyk' (Various methods of punishment used by the Persians), reflects the eighteenth-century European interest in documenting foreign customs and judicial systems. Philips, a Dutch engraver active in Amsterdam, produced this image for a larger publication, as indicated by the page numbering in the upper right corner.
The composition is structured to display multiple scenes within a single frame. In the foreground, figures are depicted engaged in various acts of corporal punishment, while the background features architectural elements suggestive of a Persian city. The artist employs precise line work to define the figures, the surrounding walls, and the foliage of the trees. The use of cross-hatching creates depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the stone structures and the clothing of the individuals.
As a historical document, the print offers insight into how European audiences of the early 1700s perceived and categorised non-Western societies. The narrative approach, which groups several distinct actions into one view, is characteristic of the period's illustrative style. The print serves as a record of the era's graphic techniques, demonstrating the technical skill required to translate complex scenes onto copper plates for mass distribution in books. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the figures allow for a clear reading of the depicted events, maintaining a documentary quality that was common in the travelogues and historical surveys of the time.
